Protect Your Church with Our Legal Health Check-Up Series Learn More

Every week, the National Center for Life and Liberty (NCLL) receives calls from pastors, ministry leaders, and Christian schools facing unexpected legal threats—some urgent, some subtle, but all potentially devastating if left unaddressed.

Our mission is simple: to stand in the legal gap, so ministries can stay focused on their mission without the crushing weight of legal confusion, intimidation, or litigation.

This month, we’re sharing three real-life stories that reveal how suddenly a church’s work can be threatened, and why legal preparedness is essential.

This Month’s Featured Cases

A Troubling Disclosure and a Church That Took the Right First Step

During a midweek counseling meeting at a church, a staff member sat down with a young adult looking for guidance and support. The conversation was emotional but took a disturbing turn when the individual began describing past interactions that raised serious concerns involving children.

While the disclosure was vague, it was enough to cause deep alarm.

The staff member immediately notified leadership, who called NCLL before taking action. Church leadership wanted to do everything possible to protect children while ensuring their response was both lawful and responsible.

We acted quickly—reviewing state reporting laws, evaluating clergy privilege boundaries, and advising the church on how to document the interaction, notify the right authorities, and update their internal safety protocols.

Thanks to their swift response, the church fulfilled its duty, protected those who may be at risk, and reaffirmed its commitment to being a safe place for families and children.

Compassion Meets Resistance in a Changing Neighborhood

In a fast-developing metro area, a local church had been running a weekly outreach for years, offering meals, clothing, and prayer to individuals experiencing homelessness. It was a ministry rooted in compassion, but not everyone approved.

When a new commercial office complex opened next door, complaints started rolling in. Eventually, a law firm representing one of the tenants sent a formal cease-and-desist letter, accusing the church of attracting “undesirable activity” and creating a public nuisance.

The church contacted NCLL.

We pushed back forcefully. Our team responded directly to the legal threats, asserting the church’s protected religious use and reminding the opposing party that ministering to the marginalized is not only lawful — it’s central to the Gospel.

We also helped the church tighten its safety policies, coordinate with local officials, and prepare for any further escalation.

The ministry continues today, stronger than before. A new wave of volunteers has joined in response to the attack.

False Accusations Go Viral, But Truth Wins Out

A ministry operating a Christian school began receiving alarming messages from parents and donors. A series of anonymous social media accounts had started spreading false accusations against the school’s leadership. These included edited videos, misleading claims, and fabricated “leaks” aimed at stirring outrage.

The damage was growing. Enrollment inquiries dropped. Church members began asking questions. Staff morale was faltering.

That’s when the ministry called NCLL.

We immediately began tracking the source of the attacks, issuing digital takedown notices, and helping the ministry document the harassment in case litigation became necessary. We also helped leadership communicate transparently with parents and donors, restoring trust and bringing clarity where confusion had taken root.

In the end, the truth won out. The ministry’s credibility emerged stronger than before.

Looking Ahead

These real-life cases remind us why we do what we do. When churches and ministries face lawsuits or legal threats, resources meant for outreach are diverted to legal defense.

By coming alongside them, we help ensure they can continue preaching the Gospel, serving their communities, and shaping lives for Christ.
