In recent months, churches have faced disruptions that once seemed unthinkable. Services interrupted. Congregations unsettled. Pastors forced to make immediate decisions without preparation.
At the same time, global tensions have intensified. Ongoing conflict involving Iran and retaliatory military strikes abroad are reminders that instability overseas can contribute to heightened uncertainty at home.
While there is no specific advisory identifying churches as targets, periods of geopolitical conflict often increase overall security risks for public gatherings, including houses of worship.
We do not raise this to cause alarm, but to encourage thoughtful stewardship.
Ministry leaders are entrusted not only with spiritual care, but with the physical safety of their congregations. Emergencies, whether medical incidents, severe weather, disruptive individuals, or acts of violence, rarely arrive with warning.
Preparation made beforehand often determines whether a crisis becomes chaos — or a controlled, lawful response.
What Preparation Looks Like
Every church differs, but several foundational steps apply broadly:
Develop and regularly review a written emergency response plan
Identify potential risks, including medical and security threats
Coordinate proactively with local law enforcement and first responders
Train safety teams in lawful and appropriate response measures
Evaluate building access during services
Ensure compliance with applicable safety and liability standards
There is no single formula for responding to a disruption. What matters most is that the response is deliberate, not improvised in the moment.
Protecting What Is Sacred
The mission of the church has not changed. Worship, discipleship, and proclamation of the Gospel remain central in every season.
But wise stewardship requires recognizing the realities of our time.
The NCLL continues to assist churches in developing legally sound emergency preparedness strategies so ministries can remain focused on their mission, gathering for worship in peace and proclaiming truth without unnecessary interruption.
Because what is sacred should also be protected.
