While most Americans made final preparations for the Christmas holiday, the controversial “parking lot tax” was repealed. The reversal was excellent news for churches and other nonprofits facing a twenty-one percent tax on parking and other transportation benefits for employees.

The 2017 measure conflicted with the religious liberty of churches and other faith-based, nonprofit organizations. As NCLL President and General Counsel David Gibbs III stated, “The federal government should never be allowed to impound charitable donations, given freely and generously for ministry and mission, in their cynical attempt to compensate for decades of poor spending decisions.”

The change was part of a $1.4 trillion bipartisan spending agreement.
